Nature is also present in India through the efforts of the Government : national parks are now well protected. The tiger as well as leopard population is on the increase, and elephants are numerous.

Corbett National Park

India's first and finest park, the Corbett National Park, spread over 520 sq. km along the banks of the Ram-ganga river, just 300 km northeast of Delhi in the foothills of the Himalayas . Established initially as Hailey National Park in 1936, in honour of Sir Malcolm Hailey, then governor of the United Provinces, the name was changed to Ram-ganga National Park in 1952. In 1957, it was finally named as Corbett National Park in memory of the late Jim Corbett, the legendary man-eater leopard hunter, naturalist-turned-author and photographer who had helped in setting up the park and demarcating its boundaries.

110 Species of trees, 51 of shrubs and over 33 of bamboos are found here. There are three distinct seasons in Corbett, cold from November to February, hot- from March to June, and rainy- from July to October. Over 50 mammals, 580 birds and 25 reptiles species have been listed in the Park. Also astounding is the insect life there. Corbett Park is a known haven for tigers, largely owing to the success of WWF funded tiger-project that was launched in 1973. Other animals which add to its attraction are the leopard, the cat-leopard, the jungle cat, the fishing cat, the Himalayan black bear, the dhole, the yellow-throated morten, the elephant, the porcupine, the barking deer etc. Some of the birds commonly seen here are the osprey, the crested serpent eagle, the black winged kite, the shikra, the Pallas's fishing eagle, the spotted eagle, the shrikes, the babblers etc.

Rajaji National Park

Nature and wild-life have been an integral part of Indian consciousness. As with trees, so with animals, a deep link exists between men and his natural environment. Rajaji National Park is remarkable for its pristine scenic beauty and rich biodiversity. This is truly a paradise for nature lovers and wild-life enthusiasts. The wild-life of the park is particularly blessed with elephants, tiger, leopards, and deer gorals.
